MaD Member of the Month

MAY 2017

Name: Paule Poulin

Age: 46

CrossFitting Since:  September 2012

Most memorable wod: Chelsea, in my first WOD at MaD, thought I would die if all WODs here were like this.

Favourite wod: Grace

What I hate to see on the board: Running

Favourite Lift:  Snatch and deadlift

Biggest change in myself physically: Different body shape and having trouble to fit the upper body in shirts :).

Biggest change mentally:  Crossfit gave me a focus for keeping fit and keep pushing my limits.

Next 3 month goal: North Islands olympic weighlifting, Bar Muscle Ups and Handstand walk drills

Most memorable moment: 1RM Deadlift event for Masters Online Qualifiers in 2016, 14th place.

Why I CrossFit:  Coming from a ice hockey and team sports background, I love how Crossfit is a community sport yet everyone gets to put in their own stamp on their training and pursue their own goals. A supportive community makes it very motivating to keep training and you meet people of all ages and background.

Favourite Meal: Not so much of a complete meal but homemade kumara fries and cheesecake.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: I love CrossFit because it is so varied and scalable, and for all ages. If you give it an honest try you will love it.

APRIL 2017

Name: Carmen Hughes

Age: 23

CrossFitting Since:  November 2014

Most memorable wod: The 7’s

Favourite wod: FGB

What I hate to see on the board: Running (slow people probs)

Favourite Lift:  Snatch

Biggest change in myself physically: “oh my gosh you can actually see my clavicles! I didn’t know there could be muscle definition there… holy guacamole look at my little baby back muscles making a sneak preview!” Plus 35lbs of fat loss

Biggest change mentally:  Learning to trust the process

Next 3 month goal: HS walk 10 feet, and fit into the 75kg oly weight class

Most memorable moment: Doing my first open workout Rx’d!!! (17.4)

Why I CrossFit:  CrossFit has not only taught me to love myself the way I am but its also taught me that we all have strengths and weaknesses. Some people are strong, some people are great at gymnastics, take your weaknesses and work on them till they’re your strengths. CrossFit has made me my own worst critic, I’ll no rep myself before someone else does, its given me the ability to have more mental and physical toughness then I ever imagined. I go to the gym to make myself better while throwing some weights around with some pals.

Favourite Meal: BREAKFAST!!!

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: CrossFit is the never ending variation of functional fitness that includes weightlifting and conditioning training. CrossFit is for everyone, why are you even asking, lets go lift some shit. Also it’s amazing and it’ll change your life!

MARCH 2017

Name: Rosie Peterson

Age: 22

Most memorable wod: White – memorable for how physically and mentally hard it was but finishing it was an awesome feeling

Favourite wod: Christine. Also I wouldn’t say ‘favourite’ but I think I kind of enjoyed doing Murph?

What I hate to see on the board: Man makers

Favourite Lift:  Deadlifts or Cleans

Biggest change in myself physically: My overall strength and muscle tone, as well as fitness levels have increased massively and I love it. Strong is sexy!

Biggest change mentally:  The ability to push myself to my limits and not give up when it gets tough. Also my attitude towards trying new things when they seem strange and pushing myself out of my comfort zone (e.g. Oly lifting when I first started).

Next 3 month goal: To string together more double unders and get that 100kg deadlift!

Most memorable moment: The Christmas partner challenge, a great day working out with good people and enjoying good food and beer!

Why I CrossFit: It makes me feel so fit and healthy. Despite the fact some days I am dead on the floor after a workout, the feeling of ignoring that little voice telling you to quit and pushing through the pain to finish a workout or get a PB is such a rewarding feeling. Also meeting so many new people and making new friends of different age groups and backgrounds is awesome.

Favourite Meal:  Such a hard decision, I love food! Probably Thai or a juicy eye fillet steak.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: Majority of the time I say just come with me and find out. But I would describe it as a mix of weightlifting, gymnastics movements, cardio and bodyweight training combined together to make an awesome way to get strong and workout!

Biggest change in myself physically: I feel stronger and I fit my uniform a hell of a lot better than I used to.

Biggest change mentally: Actually looking forward to getting up and working out first thing in the morning

Next 3 month goal: Work is taking me away for the next three months so my goal is to try and maintain the level that I am at strength wise and increase my fitness level.

Most memorable moment: Completing Bad Medicine a) without dropping the ball, and b) retaining my fondness for Bon Jovi.

Why I CrossFit: CrossFit is the only form of exercise that interests and challenges me enough to make it a regular habit. I had tried running and joining a regular gym but they just weren’t able to keep me interested (or off the couch) enough to maintain a regular routine. At Mad I get challenged differently every time, as well as being well instructed and encouraged by the coaches and other members.

Last Cheat Meal: Pizza, but it was Gourmet Pizza so that’s OK isn’t it Donna???

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: To be honest most have a fair idea of what CrossFit is and their question is more along the lines of “What lit a fire under your bum to go and join that?” But I tell any who ask further that you get well coached, all the movements are scaleable, and that the best way to find out is to come down for a class.

MARCH

Emma A

Name: Emma Austin

Age: 31

Favourite wod: I like most EMOMs and Barbell complexes

What I hate to see on the board: Running and/or rowing.

Favourite Lift: Snatch

Biggest change in myself physically: Feeling muscle again after loosing so much after having children

Biggest change mentally: I actually want to come to the gym. I have always done some sort of training but never enjoyed it like I do now.

Next 3 month goal: Focusing on Oly lifts and improving each 41 degrees comp

Most memorable moment: My first Oly comp last month. Just wanted 6 good lifts so really happy I achieved that

Why I CrossFit: I need the strength and fitness for work, and this is a fun way to achieve that. Also want my girls to grow up seeing their mum enjoy getting stronger and stronger

Last Cheat Meal: I don’t deprive myself of any food I like. I know how much I can eat each day to maintain or lose weight so I just work around that. Plenty of room for treats 🙂

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: I don’t get asked very often.. I think most people seem to know now?!

FEBRUARY

Paul F MoM

Name: Paul Fraser

Age: 47

CrossFitting Since: August 2013

Most memorable wod: Not one workout but three in a couple of hours in the 2104 Christmas partner challenge. Competed with my running friend Rumi and even though our results did not go our way, we put all our effort, sweat and energy into the challenge. A great way to finish off the year and recommend to everyone no matter where you are in your crossfitting life.

Favourite wod: Bad Medicine, what other wod is there which drives you to finish faster because you are tired of hearing the same song over and over and over again. Let alone looking after a med ball like your life counted on it.

What I hate to see on the board: Hate is such a strong word however I intensely dislike seeing Burpees up there, I still have not mastered these yet the movements look so easy.

Favourite Lift: Any of the powerlifting lifts, lately I am constantly bettering previous attempts and enjoying my success. (Sorry Rocky I do not have a PB dance like yourself)

Biggest change in myself physically: The marked improvement in my upper body strength.

Biggest change mentally: Knowing that there can be challenges in life that if you can break them down and be determined to reach the end you will succeed.

Next 3 month goal: To tidy up my food choices and shed a bit of the Christmas cheer.

Most memorable moment: Turning up for a class and nobody was there except for Lou. She still put me through my paces and the satisfying thing was while completing the wod, the guys that came in to do a lifting session supported me to finish the wod in style. This showed me the great community feel the MaD Crossfit has.

Why I CrossFit: Why not? I was not doing anything prior to coming across the MaD team. It has given me energy and strength I have not called on for years.

Last Cheat Meal: Lately have been very good with my food choices, but could not go past a custard square from Osler’s bakery in Wairoa while on holiday last week.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: I have never been a gym fan, however when I talk to my mates, it is all about the variety that Crossfit offers from lifting to a wod and that every class is different. Every day is a challenge and I love it.

JANUARY

Jen Rope Climb

Name: Jennifer De Wald-Harrison

Age: 44 for 25 more days!

CrossFitting Since: March 2013

Most memorable wod: The first one I Rx’d – Annie and the OHS Chest to Bar Pull Up workout in the Open last year. Didn’t think I would get a single rep, but I got more than 1 and surprised myself.

Favourite wod: I like all WOD’s even though people believe I prefer running or body weight workouts.  I like Crossfit because of the fact that it is varied and I have to just do what is on the board – and most days, I can do it.  I enjoy the challenge and the variety.

What I hate to see on the board: I am not a big fan of thrusters. : )

Favourite Lift: Snatch and back Squat.

Biggest change in myself physically: My core strength.

Biggest change mentally: My core strength. : )

Next 3 month goal: Focus on my nutrition and making time for some specific training around the Olympic Lifts.

Most memorable moment:  Seeing my girls at CrossFit Kids and at home replicating what they have seen and done – jumping rope, squats, push ups, burpees, climbing street signs.  I love it!  I keep fit and want to be strong as much for myself as for them.  See. Do. Be.

Why I CrossFit: I love the variety of the workouts, the strength and power I am building, the wonderful crew at MaD and the fact that someone else does the hard work for me (ie. Matt) and I just have to show up and workout.  I don’t have to plan,  don’t have to worry, I just do.

Last Cheat Meal: I never cheat! I enjoy food and eat well most of the time. Food should be enjoyed and nourish you as well.  I try not to create unnecessary hang ups around food.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: I generally say, “No, it’s not stations or interval training. It’s strength, power, mobility, varied and functional movement.  It’s never boring and I just show up and someone kicks my ass for an hour.  And I love the community. I get my workout and social interaction in, in one hit.”

DECEMBER

Box Jump Overs Ben P

Name: Ben

What I hate to see on the board: Overhead squats Uggghh.

Next 3 month goal: Handstand walk.

Most memorable moment: The first time I did kipping pull ups in a WOD.

Why I CrossFit: The classes are always different, there is always a coach to help/guide/push you, the gym is always full of good people to workout with, and it’s a satisfying way to see/monitor my physical improvement.

JULY

Tash cleans

Name: Tash Willis

Age: 25

CrossFitting Since: May 2012

Most memorable wod: filthy 50. I tried to take this on when I first started crossfit and had been drinking (a lot) the night before. Definitely put my ego in check. Let’s just say I ran to the toilet as soon as I got home.

Favourite wod: anything with a barbell complex.

What I hate to see on the board: Not too much scares me anymore but burpees are still one thing I don’t love.

Favourite Lift: Squats of any kind.

Biggest change in myself physically: this would definitely have to be because of my diet. Since I started taking my diet a bit more seriously I have more energy and feel much better overall.

Biggest change mentally: I am so much more educated about what my body can do if I take care of it. If I’m not feeling well I generally know how to change it. I also know now what I am capable of and have the confidence to give everything a go.

Next 3 month goal: I want to work my way up to a 100kg squat. Might take a bit longer but I think I’ll get close!

Most memorable moment: all the times I ended up being able to do something I didn’t think I could.

Why I CrossFit: I love our community and the motivation it gives me to keep turning up. The members and coaches are all just awesome people.

Last Cheat Meal: at the pub on the weekend I had some wedges with salsa, sour cream, and cheese. They also came with some rum and coke.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: I’ve never been able to master this answer. I usually ramble on something about weightlifting, Olympic lifting, gymnastics and other things until I think they have some kind of idea.

JUNE

Tammy

Name: Tammy Kaiwai

Age: 27

CrossFitting Since: November, 2013

Most memorable wod: Chelsea – 5 pull ups, 10 push ups, 15 squats, on the minute every minute for 30 minutes. I was very thankful to do this with a partner but still struggled to move afterwards!!

Favourite wod: I’m still waiting to find one.

What I hate to see on the board: Cleans – I’m still trying to find my co-ordiantion for this one.

Favourite Lift: Squats – front and back

Biggest change in myself physically: Increase in upper body strength.

Biggest change mentally: CrossFit has given me confidence to use weights. Like many females I had never used a barbell let alone put weight on one. Now its something I do without thinking.

Next 3 month goal: Progress my body rows to banded pull ups, even just one!

Most memorable moment: Completing a few games workouts – its incredible how that atmosphere pushes you.

Why I CrossFit: I joined CrossFit to become fitter and stronger and MaD CrossFit has given me that plus more.

At MaD I’m motivated to make my 3 classes a week, I’ve never repeated the same workout and I’m surrounded by amazing people who never make me feel bad if I’m last but make me feel good because I’ve finished the workout. Plus there’s a few more crazies to work out with at 6am!

Last Cheat Meal: Homemade pizza and ice cream

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: Its a style of training which combines Olympic weight lifting, gymnastics and other things you haven’t done since you were a kid, may not sound it, but it’s FUN.

MAY

Woodrow tire flip

Name: Matt Woodrow

Age: 26

CrossFitting Since: March 2012

Most memorable wod: Murph, nothing quite like that feeling of trying to run out the door the second time and realising you’ve still got it easy.

Favourite wod: 500m row.

What I hate to see on the board: Thrusters!

Favourite Lift: Overhead Squat.

Biggest change in myself physically: Not being able to fit any of my pants. Squatting is pretty great.

Biggest change mentally: Figuring out that there’s more to training than just burying yourself daily. Bit change from the swimming mentality.

Next 3 month goal: Maybe not quite the next 3 months, but I really want to hit a 200kg total at an Olympic lifting comp

Most memorable moment: First muscle up. Such an awesome feeling figuring it out after a few weeks of practicing.

Why I CrossFit: Because I love it? Need something to stop me from going insane sitting still working all day, and this is it.

Last Cheat Meal: Sprig and Fern, Pizza and Beer.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”:   I think I’ve run out of friends who’ll listen to me talk about CrossFit at this point.

APRIL

Kirtin MMM April

Name: Kirstin Keene

Age: 31

CrossFitting Since: June 2013

Most memorable wod: 2km row time trial – mainly cause I wanted to vomit afterwards, so memorable for all the wrong reasons!

Favourite wod: Christine

What I hate to see on the board: Overhead squats – they don’t get any easier.

Favourite Lift: It’s a tie between bench press and squats

Biggest change in myself physically: I feel so much stronger now and have muscles I can actually see – oh and my clothes fit me better too 🙂

Biggest change mentally: I have the mentality now that if I look in the mirror and don’t like what I see; I know that if I want to fix it I can –  Before I started crossfit it just seemed a bit far off – but the results are the proof in the pudding.

Next 3 month goal: To attend barbell club and improve my lifting technique

Most memorable moment: Watching the Wellington cup last year and being in awe of the amazing talent we have at the gym

Why I CrossFit:

  1. My flatmate made me come along – and from that day forward I was addicted
  2. The MaD CrossFit community are awesome and it’s always a good laugh – regardless of how horrible some of the WOD’s can get
  3. I love the challenge and I don’t get bored
  4. Lifting is fun and so satisfying 🙂

Last Cheat Meal: I had a cheeseburger the other night (eeek), but it tasted so good!

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: I usually say it’s a workout that is never the same as yesterday; we work on flexibility, lift and do high intensity workouts. And then I invite them to come try it out……

MARCH

Greg on the Fatbar

Name: Greg Pickering

Age: 27

CrossFitting Since: Jan 2013

Most memorable wod: First RX workout… I still get a massive buzz everytime I’m able to RX.

Favourite wod: Anything with legs – running/squats/box jumps… Nancy covers that.

What I hate to see on the board: Bench Press

Favourite Lift: Back Squat & Overhead Squat

Biggest change in myself physically: While I’m lot a stronger than I was a year ago, I’m also a lot more coordinated – still a million things to learn, but feel as if I’m getting some things right.

Biggest change mentally: I don’t underestimate myself as much – I have realised I am more capable at getting it done than I previously thought.

Next 3 month goal: Goal 1: To sort out my nutrition. My meals are pretty awesome and generally paleo in nature – However I’m a sugar addict (picture Cookie Monster with the munchies) and I ruin most of the good work with way too much sugar between meals. Goal 2: String together at least 20 kipping pull ups and use them in a workout.

Most memorable moment: A recent WOD where everyone else had finished a good 2 mins before me – but the support from the rest of the class really got me through those final minutes when the end looked completely unachievable.

Why I CrossFit:  Physical and mental health – I’m a better/nicer person when I get at least 3 workouts in a week.

Last Cheat Meal: Burger Fuel, C’N Cheese

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: They probably don’t need to ask, as I’ve already told them about it.  I’d tell them that CrossFit challenges you physically and mentally every session.  You never get bored and it is genuinely fun.  The people are also a big part of it too – trainers and classmates who want to see you be the best you can be.

FEBRUARY

Neil Deadlift PL Total

Name: Neil Anderson

Age: 29

CrossFitting Since: Jan 2012, at MAD since May 2013

Most memorable wod: First Hero WOD at Mad, Tim – everything went to plan on that one and I did not keel over at the end.

Favourite wod: Nancy

What I hate to see on the board: Push Ups or Bench Press

Favourite Lift: Overhead Squat

Biggest change in myself physically: My spine no longer resembles the shape of my desk chair! And I can almost bend over and touch my toes, Crossfit has shown me how important it is to move properly even when doing the little every day things like bending over, picking things up, sitting or even standing.

Next 3 month goal: Work on technique a bit more. Would like to be able to link 20 pull ups together, and one day it would be nice to get a muscle up.

Most memorable moment: Trying the Crossfit open last year, was a real eye opener in terms of how much further there is to go, but it was a lot of fun at the time.

Why I CrossFit: I like to get out and move and it is such a good breakaway from the rest of the day, plus it is always fun to throw some heavy things around.

Last Cheat Meal: Every day is a cheat day for me.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: I think it is one of the best ways to workout; it pushes you to try things you would never do by yourself. The best part though is the programming all you need do is keep turning up and you will see some results.

Why I CrossFit: Because I am addicted to it.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”:  Constantly varied functional movement performed at high intensity.

CrossFitting Since: Jan 13

Most memorable wod: I can’t remember what it is was called but it was one with TTB.  My toes reached the bar for the first time. I stopped my work out looked at my friend Yasmine with a ridiculously huge smile on my face. Then I forgot what the WOD was!

Favourite wod: Toss up between ‘The Bear’ and Filthy 50.

What I hate to see on the board: Double Unders.

Favourite Lift: Push Press and Bench

Biggest change in myself physically: Other than my 90% of my clothes being too big, the amount of strength that I’ve gained.

Biggest change mentally: Having the ‘fire in my belly’ come back to me after having 2 kids.

Next 3 month goal: To stay consistent and determined.

Most memorable moment: First day of On ramp. Donna stands next me and says, “So I hear you’ve been staring at my car the past year?”  I was ready to crap myself and run for the door.

SEPTEMBER

Jabbo

Name: Jabbo

Age: Old… Let’s just say I have ‘life experience’ in abundance.

CrossFitting Since: March 2013

Most Memorable WOD:  For the wrong reasons… March 13th Hopper Deck and the Ace of Spades was flipped which was MURPH.

1 Mile Run

100 Pull ups

200 Push ups

300 Squats

1 Mile run

My maths has never been a strong point of mine… Hence I did an extra 50 jumping pull ups!!

Favourite WOD: Favourite WOD, Hmmm is that possible?? Looking forward to having a crack at the LUMBERJACK 20, that count?

What I hate to see on the board: Handstand Pushups… I mean really??? What’s that about?? Overhead Squats, I’ll get there. Bench Press, my pecs and rotator cuff are well and truly wrecked from doing this exercise.

Favourite Lift: Back Squat and Deadlift.

Biggest Change In Me Physically: I definitely feel alot stronger than I have for some time. I gave up doing weights about five years ago as I’d gotten tired of the repartition.

Biggest Change In Me Mentally: I’ve made a conscious decision that I’m here to learn the correct techniques for the lifting and that it will require time and commitment to see results and improvements.

Next Three Month Goal: Keep chipping away at my flexibility (it’s not so good), double unders and pull ups.

Most Memorable Moment: Anytime D-money tells you off for ‘bad technique’, laughing now as I think about it. Bad Jabbo!

Seeing Rocky doing the splits and thinking that would be pretty cool to do… Then remembering I’m a guy and it wouldn’t be so good for the you know what’s.

Why I CrossFit: I enjoy the challenge that it presents both mentally and physically. It requires me to be committed to doing it, having the discipline to do it properly and the self belief that no matter how bad I’m feeling I WILL GET THERE.

Last Cheat Meal: That would be today, KFC Hot n Spicy, that stuff is the shizzle!

How do I answer a friend when they ask, “What Is CrossFit?”: If you’re looking for a workout that will test your body both mentally and physically then CrossFit is for you.

Why I CrossFit: to maintain my sanity and morale.

Last Cheat Meal: depends what you call cheating… I’m a moderation girl… except when it comes to red wine.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”   A high intensity, strength based style of workout that can be adapted to suit anyone’s needs and fitness levels… and you don’t have to run. No, it’s not a cult.

JULY

Andy McDonagh

Age: 36

CrossFitting Since: 2011

Most memorable wod: Jonesworthy, 2nd workout after on ramp. That woke me up to what it’s all about.

Favourite wod: Filthy 50 or Rowing Murph.

What I hate to see on the board: OHS or snatch.

Favourite Lift: Turkish get up or push press

Biggest change in myself physically: Apart from hair loss, I don’t look much different but can do a lot more normal stuff since I dragged my broken self into the gym. Most pleasing is that I can now probably match Julia Gillard in the squat rack after 4 years of dissolving into my office chair.

Biggest change mentally: Positivity that comes with having some tough wods in the mental locker.

Next 3 month goal: Be more consistent, eat better. Try and find a fast twitch muscle fibre somewhere. Plenty of strength endurance training over the winter to enjoy my summer holiday in the southern alps later in the year.

Most memorable moment: Thinking I had pleuresy after my first Fran. Turns out this is known as a Fran cough.

Why I CrossFit: Community. Expert coaching. Variety. Interesting shoes.

Last Cheat Meal: Sourdough toast with my eggs this morning.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: The perfect tonic to the daily grind.

JUNE

Abby Robinson

Age: 26

CrossFitting Since: October 2012 (but still feel like a newbie!)

Most memorable wod: It’s a toss up between Tim and Filthy Fifty… both made me want to spew after!

Favourite wod: All of them and none of them… its a love hate relationship…

What I hate to see on the board: Wallballs…. I HATE wallballs! Especially for me because I’m vertically challenged and I swear they are that much harder!

Favourite Lift: I love cleans because they’re an upper and lower body workout.

Biggest change in myself physically: Muscles in places I’ve never had muscles before!

Biggest change mentally: Every WOD is a mental challenge – it’s about pushing myself mentally and not giving up. The biggest help is getting motivation from everyone else who you know is feeling the pain just as much.

Next 3 month goal: To do a WOD rx…. so close yet so far away….

Most memorable moment: My first day CrossFitting opened my eyes to a whole new world of exercise!

Why I CrossFit: To be able to go to the gym knowing its going to be challenging and different everyday. I used to go to group fitness classes at other gyms for years and it’s always the same thing different day. I’ve noticed more change in myself in less than 6 months of CrossFitting than I did in 5 years of going to another gym. Its not a part of my day that I have to do, it’s a part of my day that I enjoy doing and look forward to.

Last Cheat Meal: My workmate brought in a homemade Chocolate Caramel Salted Cake… could not resist a small slice…

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”: The best workout you’ll ever get…

MAY

Graham KB Snatch

Graham Allen

Age: 51

CrossFitting Since: May 2011

Most memorable WOD: There are a few memorable ones, but it would probably have to go to my first WOD after On Ramp. I thought I was quite fit until then. What a shock that was!

Favourite WOD: Jonesworthy.

What I hate to see on the board: I don’t hate anything, but I’m not a fan of running. I know it’s hard to believe, but I’m not a natural runner. I don’t usually see the board until I walk through the door, so I take it as it comes. To me it’s all part of the challenge.

Favorite Lift: At the moment I’m enjoying practicing the Oly lifts and I’m looking forward to the Barbell Club. Favorite movement would be KBS.

Biggest change in myself physically: Apart from losing 25kg since I started and having the ability to lift my arm above my head, the increase in my fitness level is what I’ve noticed the most.

Biggest change mentally: The ability to zone out and keep going, even though it’s hurting like hell. Oh, and becoming a little more patient (sometimes!)

Next 3 month goal: To make more of an effort to crack pull ups, as they’re driving me nuts at the moment (What did I say about being more patient!)

Most memorable moment: Apart from arriving at the box in a different time zone to everyone else the other week, it would have to be my first RX WOD. I had a grin like a Cheshire cat for about a week. Also, watching Pete do Burpees is always memorable.

Why I CrossFit: Support, community & variety. These 3 things are, for me, what makes CrossFit a good place to be. I’ve competed in sports from an early age, with Rugby, Boxing & Martial Arts, but never found anything that was a whole package, until I found CrossFit. Only wish I’d found it a bit earlier.

Last Cheat Meal: Can’t remember the last cheat meal, but the next one will be on my birthday and will probably involve Chocolate cake of some sort and beer.

How do you answer a friend when they ask, “What is CrossFit?”

That’s a hard one. The conversation usually ends with “come & give it a go and find out for yourself”.
